Question32 years old w/ a 7 year old son ... the first day of lmp was December 21, 2004. I am currently 22 weeks pregnant.
I am having a lot of problems with swollen legs/ankles/feet. And, now, my shins are beginning to hurt ... almost too painful to walk. I have a full-time job, and taking time to rest and put my feet up is not an option. Is there anything else I can do to relieve the swelling? And, if not, I'm sure I can bear with it for the next several weeks, but could it potentially cause any serious problems that I should be aware of? I should probably also tell you that I have not gained a lot of weight (stress, maybe?). At 22 weeks, I currently weigh 138 lbs, and I started out at 131 lbs (I'm 5'10"). I don't know if this is relevant, but people always assume you're gaining too much weight if you have a problem with swelling.
AnswerIt is quite normal to have leg cramps and swelling at 22 weeks gestation. As long as your blood pressure is under control, and you do not have any protein in your urine, you should merely elevate your feet while you sleep (and sleep on your left side), and try to take rest periods during the day where you can elevate your feet above the level of your heart. If the pain persists or the swelling gets worse, you may be forced to stop work or take a leave of absence until the baby is born. Your doctor can write you a note. I would also suggest that you get some support stockings.
