Understanding Dilation & Labor with Prolapsed Cervix: A Pregnancy Q&A

Question
I am 37 weeks pregnant with my fourth child and was sent home from the hospital dialated to a 5.  I was told I was not yet in active labor, because I was not dialating, even with contractions anywhere from five to ten minutes apart.  I was told I had a prolapsed cervix a couple of months ago.  Could this have any effect on the dialation and labor process?

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

Cervical prolapse is a condition that can occur with multiple pregnancies and can also be hereditary. Kegel exercises can help to lessen this. But depending upon the degree of the prolapse, it may need surgical correction at a later date.

More often than stalled labors, I have heard of premature births being a result of cervical prolapse during pregnancy.

If your contractions become regular at 5-7 minutes apart, and you are already 5cm, I would have no issue whatsoever with monitoring your progress at the hospital - especially since this is #4. Better to be safe than sorry is my personal thought on the matter.

Hope this has helped and answered your question. I wish you well and an enjoyable delivery experience!
