Cerclage Procedure: What to Expect & Potential Risks

Question
thank you.  i also would like to know how the procedure is performed.  what do they do to numb the area, and is it considered a surgery. and she also is nervous because the doctor told her that they could possibily break her water during the procedure, do you know of this to happen, or is it very rare.  thank you

Answer
During a cerclage procedure, it is certainly possible to rupture fetal membranes if the needle enters the amniltic sac. They are careful not to do this and sometimes will push the membranes up with a sponge forceps while suturing. There is a small risk of rupture but it is very rare.
