Heavy Black Bleeding After Menopause: Causes & What to Do

Question
I am 35. I have a 13 yr old daughter and a 1 yr old son.  My last period started on August 30th and ended on September 3rd. My problem/question is that on Sept 10th I started having a light period again already, but yesterday and today I am bleeding a heavy black mucousy blood. I quit nursing the end of July but everything seemed to be fine until this last weekend. It also has a very icky odor to it. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Answer
Since this second bleeding started on cycle day 12 and continued until today, it may merely be "ovulatory bleeding" or "mittelshmerz" which often occurs at mid cycle during the time of ovulation. It may be that your hormones are still a bit out of whack due to stopping the nursing at the end of July. Just keep a record of your bleeding and see if it recurs again next month. You should get your regular period around September 26. If you do, don't worry.
