Natural Labor Induction Methods & Miso Safety During Pregnancy
QuestionI am 30, pregnant with my second child. Today I am 38 weeks 2 days. I am scheduled for an induction on 10/3 (my due date) because of gestational diabetes. I really want to go into labor on my own. I have two questions for you. 1. Are there any reliable ways I can get myself to go into labor on my own?
2. Is miso safe for labor induction? That's what my midwife plans on using and I'm nervous after reading about it.
AnswerUsually, when I have a patient who is a gestational diabetic, I allow her to reach her due date, but not later. I usually induce labor using prostaglins suppositories. She is admitted in the evening and a Cervidil suppository is inserted into her vagina. She then starts to have contractions. The suppository is removed 12 hours later and, if she is not in labor, pitocin is started to cause contractions. There are not many good natural methods of inducing labor. Sometimes nipple stimulation and a shower will start labor. Sometimes having intercourse with your husband will start contractions (semen contains prostaglins which can start contractions). I have never heard of miso as an aid to induction. The only miso I know is in Japanese soup. Misoprostol (cytotec) is a medication that is used to induce labor. Is that what your midwife was reffering to? I would suggest that you follow the instructions of your care givver.
