Understanding Bed Rest and Preterm Labor: A Pregnancy Q&A

Question
I am 31 weeks pg. 2 weeks ago I had several hours of very mild contractions which resolved. The following morning I called my Dr.'s office, and was advised to go to the hospital to be monitored. When the L&D triage checked me I was 3cm dilated and 70% effaced. I was given steroids, IV antibiotics, and magnesium sulfate (even though I was not having contractions). After 2 weeks in the hospital with no change and no contractions, I am at home on bedrest. I have several questions:
1. When can I expect to be let off of bedrest?

2. When I am off bedrest, can I resume having sex w/ condoms?

3.At what point does hospital bedrest become necessary?

Answer
Monique,
These are great questions. Your doctor will advise you when he or she feel comfortable letting resume normal activities. Usually it is 36 or 37 wks.
Unless, you have multiple partners, I'm not sure why you need to have intercourse with a condom while pregnant. If you or your partner have genital herpes, you would continue using a condom, but other than that, you don't need a condom right now.
If your cervix changes more, or your bag of water breaks, or you start feeling contractions again, you would be admitted to the hospital again. There are a lot of OB docs that wouldn't have let you go home being 31 wks, 3cm and 70% effaced, so enjoy your own bed for the time being. Make sure you really follow being on bedrest at home. You shouldn't be getting up for anything other than to use the restroom and shower. Meals should be brought to you if possible, or keep it simple if you have to go get it. Good luck to you!
