Natural Labor Induction Methods & Safety Concerns

Question
My first child was induced and 12 days late. I was in labor 20 houres they almost took her c section my doctor says I might have to be induced again. Im trying to find a better way that is also safe, any suggestions. Also is black cohosh safe and if so how much, and how often do you take it?

Answer
Marjorie,

I can completely understand why you want to avoid another invasive medical induction.

The good news is that just because you went "overdue" with your first doesn't mean that you will need an induction with this baby.  The average length of a first pregnancy worldwide is 41 weeks 1 day.  Given that, you were very close to the first time average.

There are many techniques you can try to safely stimulate labor.  The good news is that none of them will start labor if your body isn't ready.

I've written a series of articles on natural labor induction.  You can read about the various methods at http://www.givingbirthnaturally.com/natural-ways-to-induce-labor.html

I don't recommend that you start any of these until you are at least 40 weeks.  I'd start with acupressure.  It only works when your body is ready and has no adverse side effects. You can read about it at: http://www.givingbirthnaturally.com/acupressure-to-induce-labor.html

I'd advise you to stay away from black and blue cohosh at this point as well as castor oil.  When used inappropriately, they can cause adverse reactions.

Best,
Catherine
