Understanding Spotting and Potential PCOS - What to Know

Question
My gyn suspects that I have PCOS (although I have no cysts), because I normally get my period around twice a year.  It has been about two months since my last period and for the past 2 weeks I have been spotting.  Very slightly and only noticeable on toilet paper, but I keep thinking I will start my period and I haven't.  Is this cause for concern?

Answer
You obviously have some hormonal imbalance. I don't know if you have any symptoms of PCOS but, since you have no cysts, I doubt that you have PCOS. YOu should get a workup, including a glucose tolerance test and other blood work to rule it out. For now, if you have not have an irregular cycle, I would suggest Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days, and then birth control pills to regulate your cycle for at least 6 months. You have to check your FSH, LH, and prolactin levels as well.
