Irregular Periods After Pill Use: Causes & What to Do

Question
I am 30 and i have a 10 yr. old son, who I conceived with my ex-husband. I was on the pill for 8 yrs. after my son was born and then i skipped 2 months on the pill and was told to get off and take a break.  By that time i was going through a divorce and just never got back on them. My body worked normal until after I remarried.  About 3 months after marriage, I just up and quit having a cycle at all.  In the last 3 yrs. of marriage I have had maybe 5 cycles.  My husband (age 35) is a private school teacher and so we do not have insurance.  I went to our local health dept. and they say (after internal sonogram, LSH test, pap, etc) that it "looks" like all is well but they can't really help me without sending me on to an Endocrenologists which we can't afford. My husband is healthy and hasn't ever had any major problems and we can't figure out why my body has just up and decided to quit when everything was going fine. We have been wanting another child but understand that without menstrating, I'm probably not ovualting and that means no child.  We are desperate...we've been at this for 2 yrs. now.  Is there anything that I / we can do to help get my body jump started and cycling again without seeing a doctor?  Any practical advice?  I'd love to see an RE but just can't right now. It's times like this i wish doctors worked Pro-bono like some lawyers do!  I've looked all around for someone to help me and give me any advice. It would be great if you could offer anything. At this point, I would just love to get my body working right b/c I want my hormones working properly. I understand that issue must be tackled before we can conceive anyway. I have never WANTED a cycle more than I have these last 3 yrs. going without one.  I hope I've made some sense...thank you so very very much...God bless...

Answer
There is really nothing you can do without first seeing a doctor. It does not have to be a specialist. YOu can see a general gynecologist. It appears that you have a hormonal imbalance problem and, if you have not had your period for awhile, you should have it induced with Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should get your period within 10 days. However, if that does not work, you may definitely need an endocrine workup to see if there is a problem with your ovaries, pituitary gland, or some other problem. You are correct that, until you ovulate, you can't conceive. You may wish to go to a "free clinic" at a medical school with an RE. Good Luck to you.
