Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy: Risks and Recommendations
QuestionMy friend was pregnant and she said her dr.told her that a glass of wine every once in while was good for hers and the babys heart. what is your opinion?
AnswerNormally, a glass of wine occasionally is good for your heart. HOwever, ACOG has recommended that absolutely no alcohol be used during pregnancy. We used to allow an aloholic drink a few times per week, but a few years ago, this recommendation was made. We know that alcholo can cause "fetal alcohol syndrome" with dire consequences to the baby. We do not know exactly how much alcohol is dangerous so we do not recommend any throughout the pregnancy. This is not an opinion. This is standard of care.
