Irregular Periods with One Ovary: Causes & What to Expect
QuestionI am 24 with one child and my last period was 02-18-2006. I have been trying to conceive for a long time and it hasn't happened yet. I was wondering if having one ovary make my periods come every other month or would that one have to work overtime so I would have one every month?
AnswerEven with only one ovary, you will have periods every month, not every other month. Your period (the sloughing off of the endometrium) is controlled by hormones (estrogen and progesterone). Even if you have a tiny portion of only one ovary, you still can conceive. However, if you do not have one ovary, ovulaton may only occur every other month. If you do not get your period every month, tell your gynecologist. If your last period started on February 18, you probably will ovulate on March 3 and may be able to conceive if you have unprotected sex on March 2,3,4, or 5. Keep trying. Good Luck.
