QuestionI am 30 years old with no children. My LMP was on 12/3/05. I was 7w5d at my first appointment when we heard the heartbeat and saw the baby doing well and growing. At that same appointment my Dr. pointed out that I had an unusually shpaed yolk sac. I did not know what this meant, nor was I able too, at that time, find anything on the internet about it. He told me it was nothing to really worry about, but to schedule and ultrasound at my next visit.
On Feb 14th I went back, i was 10W3d. There was no heartbeat. I had NO bleeding or cramping, EVER. My question...Why did this happen? Why was my yolk sac unusually shaped? What causes this? What does it mean for the future? Will i be prone to it next time? Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Did this cause my baby to stop growing and the heartbeat to stop beating,or was it just a "sign" that something wasn't quite right?
Thank you. I am on a quest to find out more about unusually shaped yolk sacs and any information you can provide would be most helpful, good or bad.
THANK YOU!
AnswerYou evidently had a miscarriage. Miscarriages occur in 15-20% of every pregnancy. There is nothing you can do to cause a miscarriage and there is nothing you can do to prevent a miscarriage. Miscarriages are not due to unusually shaped yolk sacs. I do not know what your doctor meant by his comment about the "unusually shnaped yolk sac". Usually, that has no effect on a pregnancy. There is no way to determine why you had the miscarriage, except that you might check to see if you had adequate levels of progesterone. You will have to ask your doctor what was unusal about the yolk sac.
