Understanding Yolk Sac Size & Gestational Age: 8-Week Ultrasound Analysis

Question
Hi,

My US measurements were as follows. Yolk sac of 4.0mm and CRL of 21.6mm. I know when I ovulated and I should have been 8w5d. The tech mentioned that the yolk sac was quite small (and when questioned said something about a link with Down Syndrome!!). Is this correct? Or am I worrying about nothing?? :)

Thank you so much.

Answer
Hello Jane from Ireland,

Your CRL measurement is consistent with 8 weeks 6 days gestational age, so it is consistent with your dates.  There is no foundation for the comment regarding the yolk sac size and Down's syndrome.  You should report that comment to your doctor and include the anxiety that it caused.  That is an inappropriate comment for an ultrasound tech to make, creating undue worry.
