Ovulation Prediction Kit (OPK) Issues & Fertility Testing - Expert Advice

Question
I have been using ovulation pred. kits this cycle and they have all been negative.  (sorry, i should have put that in my frist post) I used them through cd19 last cycle and they were all neg. then too. Is there any one brand of opk's that are better than the other?  Are there any tests that can be done by a dr to determine if I've actually Oed or not?  If I'm not Oing do I still have to wait the standard 12 months before I can have any fertility testing done?

Thank you so much for all the great advice you give on this site and for your quick reply to my question!

Hi.  I'm 32 and I have no children.  My LMP was Feb. 18.  I have been ttc since Oct 2005.  I've been charting my temps and other fertility signs.  The first 3 cycles I had a clear temp shift showing ovulation.  My last cycle showed no temp shift, but during the time I should have been Oing I had eggwhite cm and my cervix was high and open.  Is it possible to O w/out a clear temp shift on my chart?  If I continue to not see a temp shift should I contact my dr so I can be tested to see if I'm ovulating?  So far this cycle, I have ewcm and a high/open cervix (yesterday), but no temp shift.  I normally have a 31 day cycle...my last cycle lasted 38 days.

I would suggest that you purchase an ovulation predictor kit or monitor, if you are not noticing a shift in the basal body temperature chart. It is certainly possible to misinterpret the cervical mucus consistancy. If you normally have a 31 day cycle, ovulation usually will occur on cycle day #17. If your last period started on February 18, you are now on cycle day #19, and probably ovulated yesterday or the day before, especially  if you have noticed the egg white cervical mucus.,

Answer
It is difficult to determine if you have or have not ovulated (even for the doctor). Usually fertility testing is not started until you have been trying to conceive unsuccessfully for 12 months. If you believe that you are not ovulating at all, discuss it with your doctor. There is also the possibility that your cycle is longer than you suspect and that ovulation occurs much later, which is why there is no shift of temperature and the ovulation tests have not shown evidence of ovulation.
