Understanding Low Apgar Scores in Newborns: What to Expect

Question
I would like to know what are the potential problems for a newborn with a low Apgar score, for example a 2?

Answer
Lilly,
Thanks for asking this important question. APGAR is named for Virginia Apgar, and also is an acronym for Activity, Pulse, Grimace, Appearance, and Respiration.
Each one is rated 0, 1, or 2. A total score ( 1 minute after birth)of 2 means that most of the ratings were probably 0 or 1. This baby most likely needs intensive care. If it is this low the 2nd time (5 minutes after birth) then there is cause for more concern. It is possible to be pretty low at the first testing for a preterm baby, but this child would still require some special care.
Problems in the baby's future are not usually determined with the Apgar test, but your typical problems for scoring low are mainly lung functioning and lower cognitive ability. These babies need lots of love!
