Low Progesterone & HCG at 7 Weeks: Possible Miscarriage Concerns?

Question
i am 7 weeks pregnant my hcg level at 6 weeks was 17139 but my progesterone level was only 10. i had a ultrasound done at 7 weeks and they saw a baby and the heart beat was 150. is it possible that I'm going to miscarriage because of my progesterone being so low?

Answer
Hi Savannah.

Low progesterone levels can indicate the threat of a miscarriage. It doesnt neccessarily mean you are going to miscarry, but its something that has to be watched. Your HCG levels, are a little low as well, allthough not terribly low. But these are reasons for concern.

If you start to spot, or have cramping, no matter how mild or severe, you need to contact your doctor immediately. Remember, no heavy lifting, no sexual contact, so excessive excersise. Keep your feet evelvated when you can, and taking the pre-natel vitamins are a must. These are all a little added preventative measures as well.

Your levels could increase, or they could decrease. Its a hard call. But I do have concern with your progesterone level. Perhaps discuss with your doctor about taking progesterone suppliments in attempt to raise your levels, and to increase your chances of staying pregnant.

Again, if you are going to miscarry, there is nothing in this world that will stop it. Often, miscarriages occur due to defects cause by chromosone inconsistensies in the pregnancy, or because there is something terrible wrong with the fetus.

Just breath easy, speak to your doctor about progesterone suppliments, and try to stay stress free. You very well could be okay ..but I cant tell you whether its definate or not.

Hope this answers your question, and thanks for writing!
