Ovarian Cyst While on Birth Control: Understanding Your Options

Question
Hello doctor, I am so scared and I need some help.

I am 25 and have been taking birth control pills for a while now. I recently got married and dont have kids.

The other day I visited a doctor and he said i have an about 3 cm cyst on my ovary. He didnt specify what kind it was. He said to take my pills without the 7 day break in between and hopefully it will disappear.

I do not have a doctor where i currently reside and really dont know how to go about this now. I understand its something to be remembered about and watched but how scared should i be? when should i go and see a doctor next? is the fact that i have it while on birth control odd?

thank you for your time and answers. scared and confused -- z

Answer
It is very common to have ovarian cysts. They come and go and do not cause any harm unless they grow larger than 6cm in diameter. A 3cm cyst is nothing to worry about. Often, birth control pills will help decrease ovarian cysts. However, I would suggest thaty you continue taking the pills as you normally do. Take all the pills, including the placebos (pill#22-28). You should get a sonogram in a few months to assess your ovaries. If there has been no change, nothing more has to be done. I would make an appointment with a gynecologist to assess your entire health. Don't worry.
