Fetal Lung Maturity at 37 Weeks: Understanding Your Baby's Development

Question
went to my doc yesterday and found out that while i am 37 weeks pregnant my baby is weighing only 3 lbs and 7 oz. he said about 30-32 weeks. they did an amnio and will deliver tomorrow if his lungs are ready. what are the chances at 37 weeks and 3 days his lungs are ready?

Answer
Jennifer,

I think you are saying that at 30-32 weeks your baby weighed in at 3 lbs. 7 oz.  and not at 37 weeks.  Is this right?

If you are 37 weeks the chances of your baby's lungs being mature are better than at 36, and even better still at 38, 39, and 40 weeks.  The amnio will let them know if his lungs are ready.  If they deliver and feel that he is not breathing properly, they will most likely administer surfactant to help his lungs work properly.  They may also give you some medication before you deliver to speed up the lung maturity.
