Nipple Fluid in Early Pregnancy: Causes & What to Expect

Question
My doctor is guessing that I am 14 weeks along. She won't do an ultrasound until 18 weeks. My breasts have been sore, so I massage them for comfort. A few days ago, I was doing so and a clear liquid began seeping through my nipple. All I have to do is squeeze my breast and this liquid secretes. I'm told it's too early for this to happen. Could I be further along than my doctor thinks or is this common in early pregnancy?

Answer
HI Tasha,

congratulations on your pregnancy!

It is not a bad sign; this is probably a response from the massage. Personally I would stop the massaging, it stimulates this type of response and can help trigger contractions and labor farther on... check with your doctor on this.

I am assuming you do not know when you got pregnant (very common! Happened to me with my daughter, I had no clue at all when I got pregnant)  so this is why the guessing about how far along you are.  You could be farther along or not as far along as the doctor thinks; the ultrasound will give a more accurate measurement. Either way, honestly, it doesnt make much diference to the baby; the doctors guess wouldnt be so far off that you would be way way closer to delivery and leaking milk in preparation for that , so you do not have to wory about that if this is what you are worrying about. you probably are somewhere give or take a week within 14 weeks pregnant.

So you should be just fine, dont worry about the leaking... it happens. Your baby will be very well fed :-)
good luck!
