Answer
First of all, just relax. Your doctor may have other reasons to believe that the baby isn't as far along. Please remember that the last few weeks are essential to a baby's development, especially the lungs. The doctor may have seen other ultrasounds, fundal height, and other indications that cement in his mind where your baby is in development.

You are in labor- you're in early labor. However, early labor can last 1-2 weeks (and sometimes more). It doesn't sound like you are in active labor yet. As for pitocin, if you're in pain now you will be in even MORE pain with that because it makes the contractions more powerful. In addition, it will bring about other interventions that will increase the likelihood of a cesarean section.

First, don't be scared of the pain. Your perception of pain is very much tied into your sense of fear. The more you hate and are afraid of the pain, the worse it will be. When you feel a contraction, breathe through it. Don't concentrate on it, concentrate on something else. Each contraction is getting your body closer to active labor. Each moment is giving your body, and your baby, the preparation it needs to go into labor. Remember that your body knows exactly what it is doing. Your body was made to give birth.

There are other things you can do as well to help you. Warm, not hot, baths will ease the pain. Hot packs applied to the back will as well. Also try rocking back and forth on your hands and knees. Lying on your back will make you more uncomfortable. Breathe, relax, drink tea, eat your favorite foods. The important thing is to relax as much as you can. The more tense you are, the more you feel like you can't go on, the worse it will be. Recognize that your body knows what its doing. Your baby needs this time to finish up development. Easing into active labor is MUCH better than rushing into active labor and being in active labor for hours upon hours.

I recommend going to your local library and/or Amazon.com and getting "Easing Labor Pain" by Adrienne Liebermann. It is an excellent book, a very quick read, and has tons of advice on overcoming pain.

If you really feel your doctor is wrong, feel free to seek another OBGYN. However, so close to your due date, you may find it difficult to switch at this point.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
