Fertility After Depo-Provera: Pregnancy Chances & Timeline

Question
I went in and had my very first (Depo-provera)shot February 06. I haven't had another shot since then. I believe I was due in for another shot in May 06. My question is; what are the chances of becoming pregnant? I read on other websites that even if you've only had one shot, that the chances are rare to none for about 6 more months after quiting the shot. Please shed some light. Thank you.

Answer
HI Rocio,

Well I have heard several things- that you CAN get pregnant right away after the Depo wears off, and I have also heard that its affects can last years!

All I can tell you is that if you took one shot and were due for another, you are very possibly ovulating and therefore able to get pregnant. So you should use some form of birth control if you do not want to get pregnant now.

However, my best friend took Depo years ago, ONE shot after the birth of her son, who is now 12, and it took her almost 6 years to get pregnant afterwards. So there are all kinds of stories and situations...

but you cant rely on it being effective for longer than its recommended usage... So I would definitely use protection now!

good luck! andi
