Depo Provera & Fertility: Understanding Recovery Times After Use
QuestionI had no idea what birth control to take after i had my first child so i went and got on the depo provera shot for 2 years. And now we want to have another baby so i went to my doctor and she said it could take 6 months to a year to have the depo out of my body. So I was mad at myself for not knowing how the depo provera shot worked. I wish i knew so we wont have to wait that long for me to get pregnant. So now I've been off the depo shot for 2 years and still no pregnancy. Im frustrated and worried because me and my husband have been having sex everyday for the past year and still nothing. I just hope that i can still have kids. Now i know not to get on the depo provera shot again. If i would've known about the depo shot, I would've never gotten on the depo. Im so mad, I don't know what to do now. Do you have any suggestions or any advice for me. I know my husband is worried too because he thinks that the depo shot ruined my body and that i probley can't have any more kids so he's kind of mad at me too for taking the depo shot. He really wants kids so thats making me feel awful that i haven't get pregnant yet and he says he's about to give up. We really are trying to get pregnant for 2 years now. I just still hope and pray everyday that one of these days i will get pregnant that will be the happiest days of my life.
AnswerI'm very sorry you are having trouble getting pregnant. One suggestion I can make is that you might stop having sex every day for a while and see if that helps. It's not necessarily helpful because that much sexual activity could be lowering the sperm count and making pregnancy less likely rather than more likely.
You could also contact a Natural Family Planning teacher who could help you find out if you are actually ovulating and where the difficulty might be. sometimes there are nutritional and vitamin therapies that get you on the right track. But you would have to start taking your temperature in the morning before you get up and writing that figure down in a graph to get the picture for the teacher.
This website (www.ccli.org) may help you find a person in your area who can help you. You can check with some churches, in particular Catholic churches will have a list of NFP teachers in your area who can help you. You could also go to a fertility specialist doctor, but that is the expensive route and may include more hormones.
The Depo Shot isn't good but neither is the pill, the patch, the ring, etc. They all use artificial hormones that cause problems later on. The depo shot is partcularly problematic but the others are also serious drugs that have consequences. You and your husband should both find out what those consequences are the next time you make this kind of decision. It's your health, after all.
