Depo Shot Side Effects: Spotting & Concerns - What to Do?

i got my first depo shot in july. everything was pretty good until about 3 weeks ago. i started 'heavily spotting' meaning not really a period but enough to have to wear a tampon. i went to the bathroom today and it was very dark but almost dry looking when i wiped. im not sure if i should continue the depo shot or try another method. the problem is i am a 27 yr old smoking diabetic. i had an IUD and didnt have many problems with it. i did spot ALOT in between periods so the dr put me on the pill so stop this. well as soon as i started taking the pill i bled the whole month of may and eventually my IUD came out. PLEASE help! i feel like no one knows what to tell me!
