Understanding Low Beta HCG Levels: Causes & Implications
QuestionI had a negative pregancy test and my last cycle was May 15 2007.I had a beta hcg level done and it was 7 two days later I had another one done and it was 8.Is this normal?I am 43 years old and have 4 children. What would cause a beta like this?Is it possible I can be pregant?
AnswerDear Teresa,
This would be considered a non-pregnant hCG. Anything under about 20-25 mIU/ml is considered negative. With a beta hCG, for males and non-pregnant females, normal value is 5 mIU/ml and under.
In early pregnancy, we would expect the level to double in a 48-72 hour time period. Yours has not done that, which makes me look to any other potential cause for a slight increase. Sometimes a tumor on the ovary can cause an hCG increase above normal levels. My suggestion would be to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible so that a thorough evaluation can be done and a cause determined. I'm sure this would include an ultrasound which would be useful in diagnosing any potential pregnancy as well, if you continue to feel that is a possibility.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
