Swimming Safety with Cervical Changes During Pregnancy

Question
At 31 weeks, I went i nto pre-term labour and my cervix had chnaged (2cm dilated, 50% effaced, 3.5 cm long).  I was put on bed rest and nifedipine for the last 5 weeks and now the contractions and cervical length have stabilized.  I am also free to do any activity I want.  Is it safe for me to go swimming in the pool given my history of cervical change?  I have not had any bloody show, mucus plugs or change in secretions.

Answer
Dear Yoko,

You should be fine to go swimming in the pool since you have not noticed the loss of your mucus plug or rupture of your membranes (bag of water). As with any exercise, you should never exercise to the point of exhaustion or breathlessness. This is a sign that your baby and your body cannot get the oxygen supply it needs. During the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, avoid exercise that involves laying flat on your back, as this decreases blood flow to your womb.

Since you have had a significant history with this pregnancy, if you want to be absolutely sure, you should call your personal doctor to get his/her recommendation.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
