Alcohol Consumption Early in Pregnancy: Risks & Concerns
QuestionHello there, recently my ob/gyn did an ultra sound to confirm that I was about to ovulate and gave me a shot to ensure ovulation. The shot was done yesterday 5/3. I am not sure when I ovulate, as my periods are very irregular but I was curious on something. I have a bachelorrette party to go to on 5/21, if I were to drink alcohol would this be too early for it to effect anything if I were to be pregnant. It would only be about 2 or 3 weeks along if that. Please don't get me wrong, I am not one who is going to drink during pregnancy. I just want to find out if it would cause any hard if I wasn't sure yet within the first month. I would of course not drink alcohol once I found out I was for sure pregnant. Thank you!

AnswerThere is no safe level of alcohol use at any time during pregnancy, especially during the first few weeks after conception. However, we usually do not advise you to refrain from drinking alcohol until you have a positive pregnancy test. Usually, if there is any damage in the early weeks of pregnancy, it results in miscarriage rather than fetal alcohol syndrome with its anomalies. If you have any doubts as to whether you are pregnant, it would be safer to avoid any form of alcohol.
