Pulmonary Embolism & Pregnancy: Understanding the Risks & Chances
QuestionI was recently told by a doctor that because I had a pulmonary embolism 2 years ago (at the age of 25) that I should never attempt to have children because there is a good chance that it would be fatal. Is this true? - My pulmonary embolism was most likely caused by the use of birth control pills. I was NOT overweight at the time.
AnswerThere is no reason to avoid pregnancy once you had a pulmonary embolism. It usually is a "one time" occurrence and its causes are varied. I would have to know your entire detailed history before advising you more. However, I have had several paitients who have had perfectly normal pregnancies and how have had a history of a pulmonary embolus in the past. Each case, however, is different.
