Prometrium Side Effects & Early Pregnancy Pain: What to Expect

Question
I am pregnant once again. I have had 2 miscarrges in the past and my dr. has put me on the prometrium suppositories. I am @4-5 weeks and am having deep back pain as well as a burning sensation that seems like its coming from the uterus area. Is this normal? Is this due to the prometrium? Is it a common side effect? Help is much appreciated....

Answer
Dear Jeni,

Back pain can be a side effect of Prometrium. Vaginal dryness/itching/discharge can also be a side effect. So, yes, the symptoms you describe are most likely being caused by the progesterone suppositories. You should have gotten some literature with the Prometrium, but in case you didn't, here is a list of side effects:

(More common side effects)
Abdominal cramping, back pain, bloating, breast tenderness or pain, chest pain, constipation, coughing, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, emotional instability, fatigue, headache, hot flashes, irritability, joint pain, muscle pain, nausea, night sweats, swelling of hands and feet, upper respiratory infection, urinary problems, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, viral infection, vomiting, worry.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of these more serious side effects:
-sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
-sudden headache, confusion, pain behind the eyes, problems with vision, speech, or balance
-chest pain, pounding heartbeats
-migraine headache
-nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
-notable swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
-fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
-a breast lump
-symptoms of mental depression (sleep problems, weakness, and mood changes)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well with this pregnancy.
