Depo Shot & Irregular Periods: Understanding Potential Side Effects

Question
Hi, My name is Leslie. I have been receiving the DEPO shot since last October. To date I have only received 3 shots. I am currently due for another. I have been a "lucky" one, meaning that I have not experienced a single period since I started. Now, I have noticed a little wait gain, particularly in the abdominal area, and some bloating. Also, I have had tenderness in my breasts. I know these can be early signs of pregnancy, but if I don't experience periods then how could I really know if they're "signs." All of these have arose in about the past 2 months. I read on the internet that over the counter pregnancy tests may not test accurately because of the hormones used in the shot mimic signs of pregnancy, which may be what I am experiencing, or may be what is keeping me from discovering a pregnancy. I have taken 2 HPT's and both said negative. Do you think I have enough reason to make an appointment and get bloodwork done? Because I'd hate to go ahead and get my next shot if I am pregnant. I could really use someone elses opinion! Thanks

Answer
Dear Leslie,

First of all, the hormone that is tested for in ALL pregnancy tests is hCG - human chorionic gonadotropin. hCG is a hormone that is produced during pregnancy that is made first by the embryo soon after conception and then by the placenta. So any hormones used in contraceptives will not affect the accuracy of pregnancy tests. hCG is either present or it is not.

The weight gain, bloating, and breast tenderness are common side effects of the Depo shot and, yes they can also be associated with early pregnancy. But most doctors will actually do a pregnancy test before giving a Depo shot just as a precaution because there is such a contraindication. If your doctor does not and you suspect pregnancy, you should not hesitate to ask for a serum beta hCG test before receiving your Depo injections.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you well.
