QuestionA ruby from a garnet, tourmaline or spinal? I've just purchased a 'red' stone ring but even reading Renee Newman's books can't tell if it's the real McCoy... or glass!

AnswerHi Lynda - Identifying gemstones is just not my forte'. I have always found it difficult to tell similar stones apart and have just fallen to taking the item to a gemologist for a professional id. If you don't have one in your area, there is one online that will answer questions at http://www.gemologyonline.com/
I haven't tried the site yet, but will the next time I need a good id. Some good tips there too.
