Post-Miscarriage Bleeding & Cramps: What to Expect

Question
I just had a mis-carriage on July 12th and have yet to start my cycle again.  My cycles were always irregular, but for the last three days, I've been experience slight cramps, as if I were starting my period, and several instances of blood when I wiped.  I chart BBT, and so far it is going down, and not up, so I didn't think it was ovulation bleeding.  Could this be an ongoing part of the mis-carriage, or could my cycle be changing and this is the start of a new cycle?  Any help would be appreciated, I'm just a little bit confused...Thanks!

Answer
Dear Lisa,

The first cycle after a miscarriage/D&C is often confusing, so you are not alone. Most of the time you can expect your first period 4-6 weeks after the miscarriage bleeding ends. You may or may not ovulate before that first period. The first period can be heavier or lighter than normal, be very crampy or have no cramps at all, or be shorter or longer than normal for you. There is just no "norm" after a miscarriage. The first one is always a little wacky.

With you being irregular before, the 4-6 weeks window may be extended - depending upon how irregular you were. Right now, you just have to go with the flow - so to speak. (I know - bad one, huh?) But really you do.  :-)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
