Trying to Conceive After a Stillbirth: Physical Recovery & Timeline

Question
I recently (four weeks ago)lost our fisrt baby at 39 weeks. He was stillborn due to a placental abruption and resulting fetomaternal hemorrhage. I know I have to wait until I am emotionally ready before trying again but was wondering from your experience how long I need to wait physically. My labour was induced and trouble free apart from tearing and needing stitches. I don't want to risk losing another baby because I didn't give my body enough time to heal after the first pregnancy. I was told I only had to wait until after my second period?

Answer
Dear Jill,

I cannot even imagine... I will pray that you have wonderful, supportive, loving family and friends around you for comfort. For so many women I just want to reach out through this computer - you are definitely one of those women.

After any pregnancy loss (without major complications), the general recommendation is to wait through 2-3 normal menstrual cycles before becoming pregnant again. This is simply to allow your hormones to return to more ideal levels and for full and complete physical healing of your body.

Again, I am sorry to hear of your loss, but am grateful to hear from you. Placenta abruptio can also be life-threatening to the mother. Although your loss is incomprehensible, I am so thankful that you are alive and able to plan for another baby at some point in time.

I hope this has helped you in some small way and answered your question. I wish you well.

Brenda
