QuestionHello Brenda,
I had a m/c on July 20 and haven't had my period still, my husband and I had unprotected sex on Aug. 20 and August 26 (still no period) I was hoping to have had a period in Aug. (please keep in mind thus is my 3rd m/c) we are trying again. My ? to you is should I have had a period in August? could I be pregnant?
Rachel
AnswerDear Rachel,
With a pregnancy, the hCG that is produced suppresses ovulation. Most women can expect their levels to return to a non-pregnant range, and thus their period to return, about 4-6 weeks after a pregnancy loss has occurred. This can vary by how the loss occurred (spontaneous miscarriage, D & C, abortion, natural delivery) and how high the levels were at the time of the loss. However, as long as hCG is high enough to suppress ovulation your menstrual cycles will not return to normal. This is why it can often take six weeks or even longer for a normal period to return - depending upon the circumstances.
Because you did have those unprotected encounters, you cannot dismiss the possibility of a new pregnancy. Your hCG levels should be back down to a non-pregnant level from the last pregnancy by now. I would suggest that you go ahead and test for pregnancy. If it is negative, I'd recommend calling your doctor if you do not have a period this month. He/she may want to "kick start" your cycle with medication.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
