Brown Vaginal Discharge After Abortion: What to Expect
QuestionAbout 3 months ago I had an Abortion done... :(... My first period in October after the abortion, I had an extremely heavy period for almost a week. About two weeks ago, I was supposed to start my period again but instead I began to have brownish discharge (sometimes dark, sometimes light in color). Last week I would pass dark red blood clots but then back to brown. Now I still have the brown discharge. It is accompained by light but uncomfortable pain/cramping. Everytime I feel pain and cramping I have discharge following it. I am going to my doc on thursday but would like to know what this could be? I'm getting worried.
AnswerDear Gina,
Brown discharge usually means blood that is slow to pass out of the uterus, so it turns brown. It usually is not problematic in any way. However, if you have pain and cramping along with this, you should get checked. You could have retained tissue that hasn't completely passed. this also is not something to worry about - it usually just passes on its own, but can be annoying until it does.
It's good you have an appointment to get checked. I think you will find it reassuring.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
