Yaz Pill & Delayed Period: Understanding Cycle Changes & Pregnancy Concerns

Question
Hello,
I changed over to yaz last month. Last month i started my period today around noon time. I have recieved mild cramping but have not started my period yet. Today is the last day of my placebo pills. I am worried. I took an E.P.T pregnancy test and it read negative. I need advice!

Thanks
Arielle

Answer
Dear Arielle,

Sometimes the hormone dosage change in different pills can alter your cycles. YAZ contains a different kind of hormone (drospirenone) than other types of BCPs. This may be the cause for the lack of bleeding. If you have taken the pills exactly as directed every day throughout the cycle, you should have been 99% protected from pregnancy.

I would suggest that you continue taking pills as directed, however if you experience no bleeding at all (which you may expect to have even after starting the active pills), then go ahead and re-test for pregnancy after another week. Although some tests claim accuracy on the first day of a missed period, I usually suggest that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy. This tends to minimize the incidence of false negative results and also avoids wasting money on a test for a simple delay of a period by a few days. When/if you test make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I am sorry for the day delay in answering - I am SO sick. I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
