Lower Back & Tailbone Pain Relief During Pregnancy: Causes & Solutions

Question
what can i do to relieve the pressure i'm having in my lower back/tailbone area while im pregnant?

Answer
Lower back pain and pressure is common in pregnancy. It's caused by either changes in the alignment of your spine/pelvis and/or stretching of the uterine ligaments.

Make sure that you stand and walk with your tailbone under your body. Don't let the weight of your abdomen tip you pelvis so that your lower spine arches; this will make the tail bone move back. Keep you pelvis as upright as possible.

To rest your uterine ligaments. Lie down on the floor on a padded surface or carpet, with you lower legs and feet resting on an ottoman, or cushioned seat of a chair. Relax in this position for 5 minutes or so to relieve pain.

When sitting, make sure not to slouch backward. Sit upright with a neutral spine, lower back supported by a small pillow, feet supported on  an ottoman or flat on the floor. This position will allow for your body weight to be supported by the bottom bones of your pelvis, not your tailbone or sacroiliac area.

Many pregnant women get lower back pain relief by exercising in a pool, either swimming, or aqua-aerobics. The baby floats when you're in a pool and the weight of the baby is taken off the spine and pelvis.
