Painkillers, Alcohol & Conception: Risks and Concerns

Question
My boyfriend and I had both taken some painkillers (Dilaudid and Percocet I think) and had also been drinking quite a lot on the day i'm sure I conceived. Also, he takes pills and drinks on a daily basis. Is this going to cause birth defects?

Answer
Danielle,
No, you did not do any damage to a baby on conception date, but it sounds like you and your boyfriend are very careless with partying and taking drugs. How do you know when you conceived exactly? Your boyfriend isn't doing any harm by drinking and doing drugs at this point to your baby, but what are you going to do after you give birth and have a newborn to care for? Are you going to go back to taking "painkillers"? How can you and your boyfriend be responsible parents while taking drugs? I think you and your boyfriend need to get help. Good luck!

Danielle,
I apoligize if I gave the immpression that I was judging you, however, when you say that you weren't sure what kind of painkillers you took, it leaves one to assume that it was for recreational purposes. I think it is very dangerous to take "painkillers" that are not prescribed to YOU. How do you know that's what you really took? Therefore, if a person would take an unprescribed painkiller, that they are not even positive what they took, only leaves one to believe you are a "party girl". And "party girls" tend to have multiple partners, which would lead one to assume that they aren't sure who they conceived a child with. I obviously was quite wrong about you. You sound so much smarter than that.
