Confused Pregnancy Tests: Light Bleeding, Negative & Positive Results - What Does It Mean?

Question
A little over a month ago, a few days before my period was due, I spotted very light for two days... a few days later my period never came.  I waited till I was about four days late and took a home test and the test was positive.  Not wanting to get my hopes up I took another one the next day and it was negative?  Thinking it could have been negative because I was only a few days late I waited a few days and took another one when I was a week late and it was positive.  I then scheduled an appointment for a week later and had a blood test done, when I called the next day I was told the result was negative (I'm not sure if it was qualitative or quantitative).  A week later I decided to take another home test because my period had not yet started and I was still having many pregnancy symptoms, that test was positive too.  All the positive tests I took came up with the second line with in the time limit too.  Now I'm late for my second period and I'm not sure whether or not I could still be pregnant or not, and advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Dear Heather,

After three positive HPTs, a skipped period, and now a late consecutive period, my suggestion would be to return to the doctor's office for a quantitative blood pregnancy test. Just make sure you ask for a serum beta hCG test. That test will give an actual amount of hCG in your bloodstream rather than a positive/negative result. Any amount over 20 mIU/ml would be considered positive for pregnancy.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
