Post-C-Section Complications: Recognizing & Addressing Risks

Question
Hi, I recently had a second c section. According to my Obgyn, the surgery
went well and I did not bleed heavily like I did the first time. I was released
from the hospital with instructions to take iron because my hemoglobin
count was at a 7. The next evening after being home, I had a fever of 102.6. I
checked my incision to make sure it wasn't infected and I had a HUGE, rock
hard bruise across my entire lower abdomen. I was admitted to the hospital
and put on IV antibiotics for 4 days even though the blood test showed no
sign of infection. No doctor or nurse had ever seen anything like the
hematoma I had because of it's size and how hard it was and nobody was
able to tell me what happened to cause it. I was hoping this was something
you may have seen before and could give me some insight was to what
happened to me.

Answer
Dear Erin,

This type of hematoma occurring after a C-section does not happen often, but does happen. Put simply, it is when some bleeding occurs between the tissues - kind-of between the space between the muscles and the cavity where all your organs are - which can cause alot of inflammation and potentially serious infection. It sounds like you had a rather large hematoma that definitely required treatment to minimize negative effects. It is like any other potential complication of surgery... it is something that we know can happen but does not happen routinely.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and apologize for the delay. I usually try to answer within about 48 hours or so but have had a very hectic week.
