Postpartum Bleeding Risk After Previous Retained Placenta: A Doctor's Perspective

Question
Hello, I am 31 year old female. I have two children, a 4 year old and a 9 month old. I had a secondary post partum bleed with my second child due to a retained placenta. I bled a lot but didn't need a transfusion. I did have a DandC, which stopped the bleeding. I am unexpectedly pregnant now, about 9 weeks. How worried do I need to be about another post partum bleed? Are there any precautions I can take?  Can this be fatal?  I'm starting to panic because everything I read online points to disaster. I will be giving birth in an excellent hospital in Toronto, canada.
Thanks for ur time.

Answer
Dear Cathy

No worry at all as long as you keep your antenatal visits in time.
Predisposing factors can be dealt with during pregnancy.
Please plan your labor at a well equipped hospital with blood banking facilities and be sure that senior medical staff exists at night shifts. Sometimes what is called excellent hospital are fantastic in shape but lacks these essential requirements for safe delivery

Good Luck
