QuestionHello Mr. Kandeel,
I am approx 5 weeks pregnant. For the past 3 days I have been experiencing severe stomach discomfort. I wouldn't describe it as cramping. My BM's have been more regular than ever so I don't think I'm constipated. The pain got so bad last night, my husband had to take me the Emergency Room. We didn't know what was going on. I'm pretty tolerant of pain but this is just unbearable. After 2 ultra sounds and blood work they said everything looked fine and didn't know why I was having this pain. The doc said my ultra sound just showed the sack and the fetus wasn't showing yet (is that normal?).
After spending 6 hours in the ER, I've come to my own diagnosis...Could this just be gas? It's hard for me to even stand up strait while I'm walking because of the pain.
Thank you for your help, I will be looking forward to your answer and hopefully some relief!
AnswerDear Lara
Yes it is normal to find a sac and not a fetus, on transvaginal ultrasound, at 5 weeks pregnancy.
At a gestational age of 5 weeks, I am always concerned about ectopic pregnancy particularly if the pain is persistent and intolerable with no signs of abortion. I would go for B subunits of hCG level determination. Although uncommon, the presence of an intrauterine pregnancy does not preclude the possibility of extrauterine pregnancy. If you had this B subunit level done and it is normal, then probably all you need is to follow up with your doctor.
best of luck
