Perineal Tears After Childbirth: Causes, Symptoms & Repair

Question
I have had 2 (8 & 6) children and do not plan on having anymore.  I had a 1st deg tear with the first that didn't get repaired (doc thought would heal on it's own and it didn't#.  I tore a little more with the 2nd child.  Now almost every time my husband & I have intercourse (nothing crazy) it seems to get a slight tear and is sore for a day or so but then appears to heal up.  My OB was able to fix the internal tear when I had my partial hysto (1 yr ago) but the exterior repair didn't hold.  Are there other options and what type of doc would be able to help with this?

Answer
Dear M

Any gynecologist with an average experience should be able to deal with this problem. The pain you feel during intercourse in expected because of the irregular healing and probably excessive scar tissue around the wound.

Usually the old scar surrounding the tear is removed and the wound is repaired in layers. This gives satisfactory results in most cases.

Good Luck
