Understanding and Addressing Postpartum Bowel Perforation & Infection

Question
i'm 28 years old. i have 2 children. i had my daughter 2 years ago and got a third degree tear.
i wasn't tore on the outside so my doctor missed it. a day after i was released i had a problem. my bowel movements came out of my vagina. ive had a problem with bacterial infection ever since. i take an antibiotic for 30 days then none and continually alternate between taking pills and not taking them. what can i do?

Answer
If feces were coming out of your vagina, you had a fourth degree lacertaion, not a third degree laceration. A third degree laceration involves the muscles of the vaginal. A fourth degree laceration involves a tear in the rectal mucosa. If it is recognized at the time of the delivery, ii should have been repair at that time. If it is not recognized at that time, we usually wait 6 months to 1 year before repairing it. However it must be repaired to avoid the development of a rectovaginal fistula which will cause gas or feces to come out of the vagina. I would speak to your gynecologist about it. You do not need to continue antibiotics for your entire life. It can be repaired.
