IUD Bleeding After Insertion: What to Expect & When to Worry
QuestionHello,
Thank you for taking time to answer my question. I am 30 years old and don't have any children. I had a copper IUD inserted 20 days ago on the fourth day of my period. I had a lot of cramps for about 3 days, then it passed. I had some bleeding for a day or two, then only a yellow vaginal discharge (not smelly) for a week, and didn't have intercourse during the whole week after IUD. So after one week we had intercourse and I started bleeding again, and the bleeding has not stopped since then. It is not a very heavy bleeding, but it is more than just spotting I think. I use a daily feminine pad, and have to change it every couple of hours. So it is like a light menstruation. Is this normal? When should it stop? I called my doctor many times about this, but he kept saying that this is normal, and it should stop after my first period, and if it doesn't then he'll retract the IUD. Today I have more bleeding and some cramps. I am wondering if this is my period? I had my period on the 6th of this month, and I usually have it every 25 days, so it may be my period, but how can I tell the difference like this? Do you think I should go to another doctor to get my IUD checked, or is it normal to bleed 20 days after the insertion?
Thank you very much again for your time.
AnswerHello Charlie,
I'm not a medical doctor but to me this sounds abnormal. I would suggest you go to another physician if that is possible for a second opinion. I don't recommend the IUD anyway, there are too many side effects and I don't believe it is healthy. Could you use another method or do you even need to use birth control in this stage of your life? Please email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and let me know what happens. I'm concerned.
