Post D&C: Irregular Periods & Weight Gain - What to Expect

Question
Hi Sarah,

I was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage (blighted ovum) and had a D&C at 12 weeks on April 24/08.  Since then I've gained weight (that I'm finding impossible to lose!) and I've had irregular periods.

I have been eating really well, lots of fiber and veggies, little to no red meat, very limited sugar, white flour/pasta/bread.  I'm averaging about 1500 calories a day.  I've also been exercising (spin and yoga) 3 times a week.  I've never had such a hard time losing weight.

Also, my periods have been irregular since the D&C.  I didn't have a period until 8 weeks after the surgery (mid June).  I didn't have a period at all in July.  I had one mid August (about 8 weeks after the previous period). As of today (September 8th) I haven't yet ovulated.

Are these common issues post miscarriage? Do you have any explanation for what's going on in my body?   What can I do to get back to normal?

Thank you for your help,
Lisa

Answer
Hi Lisa
I'm sorry to hear of your news. All you want to do after a miscarriage is get back to normal, but it's hard to with erratic periods.

I have to say, it's not unusual to have the irregular periods after miscarriage.
It's been aprox 4 and a half months since your D&C so your body is still recovering. It can take some women up to 12 months to settle back in, this depends on how well you recover from illness & surgery in general as well as your previous cycle history (ie, if you could set your periods by the clock or if they were irregular etc.)
Miscarriage takes a huge toll on a womans body & although a D&C can help speed up recovery time, it can take months for your natural clock to get back into synch.

As for the weight gain, this is not something that normally happens after miscarriage. It could be that you have a hormonal or thyroid problem which is not only making you gain weight, but is upsetting your cycles as well.
For this reason, I would see your doctor so they can run some tests for you. Simple medication may well put you back on par quickly & get your cycles back.
In the meantime, keep a diary of your diet & exersize on a daily basis so you can show your doctor. It could even be something such as a food intolerance/allergy, but it certainly needs looking into ASAP.

I do hope this has helped. If you have any more quetions then please don't hesitate to come back.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
