QuestionI have been on birth control for about 1 month. This is my first cycle on birth control and it has been ongoing for about 8 days. It is heavy spotting, only a pantyliner is necessary but is it normal to bleed this long? Should I see a doctor?
AnswerDear Brittni,
The first few cycles on hormonal birth control can definitely alter your bleeding from what you normally experience. Since it is not a heavy bleeding, there is nothing to be overly concerned about as far as losing too much blood or becoming anemic.
I'll assume you started the new pack of pills when scheduled to after the "off week". Once the hormones in the first week of pills starts to kick in, the spotting should dissipate. The next cycle may or may not return to a more normal pattern for you, but many times your periods are lighter, in general, while on the BCP.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a Merry Christmas!
