Birth Control Pills & Weight Gain: What to Know

Question
I recently started on a birth control pill called "Diane" that is available in Canada and Europe only (I was studying abroad and accessed it there). I went on it initially to help clear up my skin since it is a very strong pill and I was breaking out, however I have noticed some serious weight gain. My stomach is still thin, but my breasts and thighs seem almost swollen. Is this common or serious, and would you recommend going off the pill? My jeans or bras don't fit right anymore....what's the cause?

Thanks in advance for your help

Katie

Answer
Dear Katie,

There is a possible side effect of the pill which is weight gain. There are also other side effects that can happen. You might want to consult your doctor since I'm not a medical professional.

I never recommend hormonal birth control methods. I don't think they are healthy for a woman's body in the long run. If you want to consider a non-hormonal birth control method, there are condoms or Natural Family Planning. Or do you need to be on any kind of birth control method at all right now. Please email me at CHERYL51@aol.com so we can talk more. Would like to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
