QuestionQUESTION: Hi, please can you help us?? I found out i was pregnant on 15/02/09 and we were both very happy. A week went by and everything was fine although had cramping more to one side the following weekend and boyfriend thought it be best to get it checked out in the hospital. I did not have any bleeding or severe pain. Everything checked out ok at the hospital on 22/02/09 hcg level at 510, although they asked me back on 23/02/09 just to check hcg levels again and to do a vaginal u/s. U/s scan showed a gestional sac of 3.5mm and hcg level at 710. More bloods taken on 25/02/09 and hcg levels were only at 1045. herefore hospital called me back for another scan on 26/02/09. Scan showed a gestational sac of 4.5mm. HCG levels were taken again on 27/02/09 and were only 1350.
Sorry for long messages...
Another scan completed on 03/03/09 and gestational sac measuring 6.5mm with yolk sac present. But again bloods taken today (5/03/09) my hcg levels were only at just over 1800.
Hospital have asked me back in tomorrow. Please can you help if this can possibly be a normal pregnancy or do we need to prepare ourselves for a bad result.
thanks for your help

AnswerHi Angela
hCG levels should double every 2-3 days. Unfortunately it seems that yours aren't progressing as normal which is an indication that something isn't right. Slow rising levels almost always indicate a 'non-viable' pregnancy, this means that at some point that pregnancy will stop growing & result in miscarriage.
On the other side of the coin, it has been known for women to carry a full term baby with slow rising hCG levels!
It's good to hear that you're getting good care & plenty of testing. This sort of monitering means that you won't be left to 'sit & wait' & you can then make the right choices for you should it be bad news.
It's difficult to diagnose so early on in pregnancy, they test you regularly so they can build up a picture of what's happening. I wish I could tell you that it'll be ok but I don't want to get your hopes up. All I can say is to enjoy your pregnancy & take each day at a time.
I hope this has helped and wish you the best of luck.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
