Blighted Ovum & Misoprostol: What to Expect After Medication

Question
I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum at about 8 weeks pregnant (yesterday). My doctor gave me Misoprostol to help the miscarriage happen more quickly. I took 200mg yesterday and experience some bright red bleeding with no clots or tissue passed. Today, I took another 200mg because I didn't think it was complete. I still haven't started bleeding again, and I'm wondering if this is going to work.

I already had one D&C a couple of months ago, and I'd like to avoid another one because I don't want to be worried about scarring and being able to conceive. If this dose of Misoprostol doesn't work, should I ask the doctor for RU486 followed by the Misoprostol? That might help the miscarriage actually happen. My body doesn't seem to want to give up the pregnancy even though it's been over for two weeks. I might also try using parsley to induce contractions, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Do I have to wait one cycle to try and conceive after this miscarriage because of the Misoprostol? I don't want to risk birth defects, but we do want to try again as soon as possible. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Katie
If you find that you do not start passing tissue within the next 24hrs, then do go back to your doctor. If you explain to them your concerns in reference to having another D&C, they may be able to look at another medication route. Mifepristone & Misoprostol are commonly used together, but as I am not medically qualified I cannot comment further on recommending anything.

In reference to parsley, although it's natural I wouldn't try anything herbal whilst you are on prescribed medication. The medical staff need to know what has/hasn't worked for you, it may also stimulate you too much & cause a more painful time. Best to err on the side of caution.

Trying again. Of course you want to start trying again as soon as possible, but too soon can actually contribute to a further loss. The least amount of time that is recommended to wait is one full cycle (usually a month) but the general recommendation is 3 cycles (or 3 months). This allows your uterus to heal efficiently (a fertilised egg likes a nice thick lining to implant into!) & allows you time to prepare yourself for the next pregnancy.

I hope this has helped and please do come back if I can help with anything else.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
