Threatened Abortion: Understanding Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Question
Hi Sarah,

I got to know abt u through one of my friends. I checked for pregnancy on the 25th of Jan 2009 and got a positive and i was about 3 weeks on my pregnancy ( i must have conceived on the 2nd or 3rd of Jan i guess - my LMP was on the 19th of December 2008). I started bleeding on the 7th of Feb and went to see my OB on the same day(transvaginal U/S was done) and she said the baby was fine but bleeding was a problem and classified my case as a threatened abortion. I was given progesterone pills and a progesterone booster shot too. I continued to bleed more until the 8th.(Passed a few clots as well).I couldn't take it anymore and went to the OB again. She did a normal U/S on me and said that I've had a miscarriage confirming my worst fears. She asked me to come for a follow-up checking after my period. I always have had a consistent cycle round 25-26 days. I'm about a week late to date. All I've had was a watery pinkish discharge(did not even soak a liner)and really uncomfortable cramps.I don't have any urinal infections. But my problem is that I'm continuing to have all the preggo symptoms i had and some days even more. (Eg. Extreme fatigue/ sore boobs/ metallic taste in my mouth/ moody/ slight temperature/ pee a lot/ sleepy always etc.)I'm really confused. Could you help me with your experience please ?
(I know I'm supposed to go and see my OB but I'm too scared- I'm having this teeny weeny hope that i might have NOT miscarried)Am i an idiot to continue  to have hope ?

Thanks
Sorry for TMI

Answer
Hi Ruwani.
Thanks for dropping by - it's great that I have been recommended, I do hope your friend had a positive experience & you have one too. First and foremost there can never be TMI! The more a questioner can tell me, the better I can answer their question.

Your loss has been confirmed by a scan, so please don't hang on to false hope. I think most of us deeply wish that there's been a mistake, even though deep down we know there hasn't been.
You are most certainly not an idiot for hoping & don't let anyone tell you otherwise too. You have to go through a miscarriage to really understand what it's all about.

In reference to your symptoms & lack of period, it could be two things.
hCG (the pregnancy hormone) can stay in your body for up to 6wks. It's this hormone that gives you pregnancy symptoms. As hCG levels drop, you'll find that the symptoms will fade & vanish. It could also explain the lack of bleeding, although some women don't have a 'normal' period for 3 or 4 months after a loss. The average wait for a period after miscarriage is 6 to 8 wks after the bleed.
The second.....could you be pregnant? You ovulate very quickly after a miscarriage so if you have had unprotected sex in the last 5wks, it's possible that you are.

It's normal to feel quite tired & drained after a loss. Your hormones are up in the air, lots of bleeding can cause dehydration & an upset in vitamin/mineral balance.
I'd recommend seeing your OB but if you really don't want to, wait a week before doing a pregnancy test. If it's negative, get yourself a good multi-vitamin to take daily. I say this because some vitamins can be harmful to a developing baby, thats why there are special pre-natal supplements on the market. If your religion means you wear full dress all year round you may be taking vitamin D and/or other supplements anyway, so if you are then you need to speak to someone at the chemist/drugstore for advice so you don't take too much.
If you are at work see if you can take some vacation time just rest & get back on track, even if you spend it at home in your PJs!

If you find that your bleeding suddenly gets very heavy and/or you get severe cramps then you need to see a doctor straight away. This could indicate an ectopic pregnancy (where a baby starts growing in your fallopian tube) or bleeding from tissue that hasn't been passed from your loss.

I hope this has helped, please come back if you have any further questions. Best of luck.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
